Bitcoin & Migration Justice

Bitcoin and Migration Justice

You shall not oppress a resident foreigner; you know the heart of a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.

-Exodus 23:9

More and more people are on the move because of deteriorating economic, environmental, and safety conditions in their homes. Christians are called to care for people on the move. Christians recall that Jesus' family was persecuted by the Romans and forced to flee their home. We also remember that the Hebrew People, foundational to the heritage of our faith, were a people on the move who cared for and welcomed outsiders. For those that are on the move, Bitcoin offers a new tool to more safely and efficiently care for their financial wellbeing.

Bitcoin allows people to store their wealth with them in ways that are more secure for the often risky migration journey. No longer do migrants and refugees need to trust informal banking networks or third parties with their wealth. Instead, Bitcoin can be used to store whatever wealth they may have by memorizing or carrying their own secret key phrase.

In addition, Bitcoin enables people to share their wealth with family and friends anywhere around the world faster, and cheaper than the existing financial system. As the global remittance market is set to increase over the coming years, Bitcoin cuts out the exploitative financial system that charges high fees for international transactions.

Many justice issues are intersectional. People and communities experience multiple discriminations that fall within these different intersectional justice categories. Part of what makes Bitcoin such a powerful tool for ministry is that it addresses justice issues in intersectional ways. Be sure to check out all the intersectional justice issues to see how they overlap.
